New Students

Everything you need to know

Maxum BJJ is a place where you can be 6 or 60 years old, learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and join a great family. Whether you’re recreational or competitive, all new students are welcomed into our home with open arms by the staff and students.

Wondering what it’s like to train with us at Maxum BJJ?

What To Expect

You might feel a sense of adrenaline or anxiety before coming down for your first class, but Maxum BJJ isn’t a traditional martial arts school where you have to worry about following cultures or customs. Our gym is an informal, friendly environment where you can train as hard as you want with your peers as a hobby to get in shape, get ready for a competition, or prepare for an MMA fight.

We don’t require students to wear a specific color gi and we don’t bow in before class. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is an art form, so we believe there should be no restrictions or limitations on how you express yourself in our gym. No matter who you are, what you like to do before or after class, or what color gear you choose to wear, you are 100% free and encouraged to be yourself within our facility.

As a new white belt, you’re going to have black belts, brown belts, and purple belts on the mat with you. You’re going to see people training for competitions and going hard with each other, which might be intimidating, but those same people will show you moves and work with you at your own level five minutes later.

When you visit our school, people are going to say hey, shake your hand, and strike up a conversation with you. You’ll be able to joke with your professors and have a good time in class while learning the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The hardest part is actually walking through the door, but once you do, you’re going to have fun, make friends, and fall in love with the sport that brings us together as family.

Preparing for
Your First Class

  • The best thing to train in on your first day is something you can move in, like a T-shirt or an Under Armour shirt and a pair of shorts or pants with a drawstring that you can tie.
  • Make sure you have a change of clothes for after class (you’re going to be sweaty).
  • You will be barefoot on the mat. Make sure your fingernails and toenails are trimmed. Long nails may cause injury while grappling, including damage the eyes or abrasions to the skin that could allow bacteria to penetrate, resulting in the cultivation of infections.
  • Take a shower before grappling with your peers if you’ve been dirty or sweaty throughout the day. There are showers on-premise if necessary. If you plan to shower at the gym, bring a towel and an antifungal soap.
  • If you have long hair, bring a hair tie with you so you can tie your hair back during class.
  • Leave all jewelry, piercings, glasses, and accessories at home or in your car.
  • Bring a mouthpiece, and get used to wearing it beforehand.
  • Be open-minded.

What You’ll Learn

You’re going to learn a grappling-style martial art where you are in close quarters with another person. You will learn basic and advanced grappling techniques starting from various positions, including how to take your opponent to the ground while standing, how to defend an opponent on and off of your back, and how to use submissions rather than strikes to control and submit your opponent.

A typical class involves a short Plyo-metric warm up and a technique drilling period followed by a live training session. This class structure is organized to provide all participants with an effective and safe workout.

Day One you will be learning what everyone else in the class is learning. It is not sink or swim but you are in the mix right from the start. Have no fear, you will be paired with a training partner that will get you up to speed. We found this is the best way to learn a technical art without weeks and weeks of white belt classes

Mat Etiquette

  • Lower belts should be respectful of upper belts, especially including instructors, and refrain from calling them out to drill or roll. If a higher belt wants to drill or roll with you, then they will invite you to train.
  • Pay close attention and be respectful to your instructors. There should be no talking, cell phone use, or walking around while an instructor is covering technique. If you need to get up to do something, please excuse yourself from the mat area.
  • Be inquisitive. Do not be afraid to introduce yourself to people and ask questions while you’re training with someone.
  • Do not bend fingers. Control three or more.
  • Do not hit the mat or get frustrated. There is no excelling in this sport (or any sport) by throwing temper tantrums. Humility gets you much further.
  • When you hit your pain or tolerance threshold, tap out of a submission/position by tapping your hand on your opponent, stomping your feet on the floor, or verbally saying “TAP” so your partner can hear it and let go of the hold.
  • Be a good drilling partner. Be attentive and work with your partner by allowing them to practice the move properly, and vice versa. Everyone benefits.
  • Students should be aware that those they are training with may not intend to train at 100% intensity. They could be injured, have trained earlier in the day, or are simply working new technique. Speak to one another. Match your partner’s pace/intensity level and do not exceed it. The mat is our home and our lab. The fight is outside of our doors at competition.

Hygiene

“On and Off the mats”

  • No shoes are allowed on the mat. All shoes must be removed and stored in cubbies.
  • You need to shower immediately after leaving class, either at the gym or at home.
  • When showering, you must use antifungal soap, shampoo, and conditioner, and keep it on your skin for 30-60 seconds. You cannot use standard fragrance or antibacterial soaps because they do not work to kill fungal infections.
  • You cannot re-wear gear. All gear must be clean prior to wearing or using it on the mats.
  • Help clean the mats at the end of class, especially if you’re the last to roll.
  • If you train with a cut or open wound, it’s EXTREMELY important to cover it. The viruses, fungi, and bacterias naturally found on other people’s skin can enter your wound and potentially cause infections like ringworm, impetigo, staph, or MRSA.
  • Shower and brush your teeth before class if necessary.
  • Trim and cut your toenails and fingernails.
  • Long hair should be tied back while training.

Student Responsibilities

  • Have a good attitude.
  • Practice humility.
  • Be humble.
  • Submit payments on time.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Bring all of your gear and clothes home. Don’t leave your belongings around the gym.
  • Be respectful and pay close attention when your professor is teaching.
  • Be a good drilling partner, and drill properly.
